Pitts. Cafeteria Chocolate Topped Wheat Bars

Found this recipe on a Berkshire Recipe site.........haven't tried it yet, but I sure do remember liking these :)

 

Pittsfield Cafeteria Chocolate Topped Rolled Wheat Bars

 

1 Lb. Butter

1 Cup Sugar

1 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar

2 Eggs

1/2 Tsp. Salt

1/3 Cup Water

2 Cups Flour

1 Tsp. Vanilla

2 Cups Rolled Wheat or Rolled Oats (Oatmeal)


Cream butter and sugars together thoroughly.  Add eggs, vanilla and water; blend well. Add flour, wheat or oats and salt.  Spread batter in a greased sheet pan.  Bake at 350 for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.  Do not overbake.   Spread with chocolate frosting.

Chocolate Frosting:

2 Squares Unsweetened Chocolate

1/2 Cup Butter

3 Tbsp. Bilk

2 Cups Sifted Confectioners Sugar

1/8 Tsp. Salt

1/2 Tsp. Vanilla

Melt chocolate in top of double boiler or in microwave.  Blend in butter and milk.  Removed from heat and add sugar, salt and vanilla.  Blend until smooth.  Spread on cooled wheat bars.  Cut while warm.
